Wimbledon walk of fame to miss 2012 Olympic date Wimbledon is taking a new cue from Hollywood as the venerated institution prepares to create a Walk of Fame for tennis greats leading to the high street of nearby Wimbledon village.
As in Tinseltown, "Wimbledon Way" will eventually comprise pavements and hand or footprints and signatures of the sport's best - presumably from the current generation onwards.
The walk, an idea of the local council to build interest for the 2012 Olympic tennis event at the club, will lead from Wimbledon rail station up the hill to the more picturesque village high street. From there it will head downhill to the grounds of the All England club through leafy green suburban streets.
"Wimbledon tennis is for two weeks a year but we get 100,000 tourist at the tennis museum throughout the year," a town official told the BBC. "The area has got huge potential to develop and grow.
"We are the only Olympic venue that already exists and that has an international tennis tournament that takes place."
The plaques will unfortunately miss the actual summer Olympics with the first of the markers to be installed in the autumn several months after the end of the Games
